Minister of Health and Indigenous Medicine, Dr Rajitha Senaratne yesterday instructed Director General Health Services (DGHS) Dr. Palitha Mahipala to fill all vacancies in the Health Ministry and other government health institutions.

Spokesman for the Health Minister, Nipun Ekanayake said that the positions in the Ministry included those of Deputy Director General (DDG–Laboratory Services, Additional Secretary (Medical Services) Additional Secretary (Public Health Services) Senior Assistant Secretary (Health Services). Persons with the required qualifications would fill the positions in the near future, he said.

The Health Minister had issued instructions to his Ministry officials to recruit 1,600 more family health workers to fill existing vacancies, Ekanayake said. Those who had passed GCE A/L would be eligible, Ekanayake said.

The Spokesman said that the Ministry was exploring the possibility of extending the age of retirement for Family Health Workers to 63. Cabinet had also given approval to re-recruit retired family health workers, he added.
