SC refixes two FR cases filed by Tissa, Somaweera

The Supreme Court yesterday, re-fixed for support on Oct. 16, 2015 the two fundamental rights petitions filed by Professor Tissa Vitharana, Leader of the Lanka Sama Samaja Party and Somaweera Chandrasiri, Vice President of the Mahajana Eksath Peramuna against the appointment of some defeated UPFA candidates as National List MPs.


The petition said the people’s franchise had been violated.


The petitioners wanted the Court to direct the Commissioner of Elections cited as the first respondent to rectify the irregular and unlawful practice.


Among the respondents are former General Secretary of the UPFA, Susil Premajayantha, the present General Secretary of the UPFA Prof. Wiswa Warnapala, General Secretary of the UNP, Kabir Hashim and several others.


Counsel Kanishka Witharana appeared for Chandrasiri.


Counsel Kalyananda Thiranagama appeared for Professor Tissa Witharana.
