The Public Health Department of the Colombo Municipal Council (PHD CMC) yesterday said that the manager of an eatery at a state owned institution had been fined and severely warned by the Maligakanda Magistrate following a complaint made by a customer last May.

Acting Food Inspector M. B. Lal Kumara said that one of the employees of the institution had complained to the PHD that she found a centipede in her food served at the canteen. Food samples had been sent to the City Analyst, who had confirmed food contamination.

Lal Kumara said that the case had been taken up yesterday (5) at the Maligakanda Magistrate Court by the Chief Magistrate J. de Alwis, who imposed a fine of Rs. 3000 on the eatery owner and issued a warning.

The Acting Food Inspector said that the PHD would carry out inspections on other eateries at government institutions.
