A group of Sri Lankan dairy farmers, who supply their daily collection of milk to Fonterra Brands Sri Lanka, proudly launched their collection of milk in a new Ultra-high temperature processing (UHT), or ultra-heat treatment pack on Tuesday at Fonterra's Milk Chilling Centre in Gampaha.

Made with milk sourced from Sri Lankan dairy farmers, Anchor Liquid Milk comes in a convenient one litre UHT pack and can be stored unrefrigerated and unopened for up to four months.

Before the launch, Managing Director of Fonterra Brands Sri Lanka, Leon Clement and Fonterra Brands Sri Lanka Marketing Director Roshan de Silva and a number of officers of the Centre walked the media through the UHT milk processing line of the Centre. The entire process allowed visibility over the supply chain from the dairy farm to the end-product.

R. Nishantha, a small-scale dairy farmer from Minuwangoda who has been supplying Fonterra with milk since the local milk chilling centre commenced, told the media,'We are delighted to see the milk that comes from our own farms is processed to create a premium product under the Anchor brand, which is a much-loved household name for many Sri Lankans. Fonterra's dairy development experts have been working with me since late last year to help increase my farm's productivity. They visit my farm twice a week to have a look at the work and to help resolve any issues on the farm such as animal health and feeding them properly. They share their New Zealand expertise with all of us and help us lift our production and income. I must say that this Milk Chilling Centre is not a one-way recipient. It’s a two-way interaction platform that makes our livelihood commercially profitable and sustainable.

'As it had never been before, now our payments go to the banks and the banks recognize us as industrial dairy farmers. Recently, I was able to get a bank-loan of Rs. 300,000 thanks to my "milk account" which would have been unimaginable otherwise. Now I can pay all my bills and save some money for the future too." Nishantha added.

According to Nishantha, all dairy farmers of the community now enjoy better incomes and more financial stability just like him.

Managing Director of Fonterra Brands Sri Lanka, Leon Clement speaking at the event said, 'Today is another exciting milestone for Anchor which is Sri Lanka's favourite dairy brand and recognised for providing high quality dairy nutrition to the nation for over 35 years. The introduction of Anchor Liquid Milk means we're able to supply the country with the goodness of Sri Lankan milk, produced according to Anchor's international quality standards.

'The introduction of Anchor Liquid Milk means we will need to collect more high quality milk from more farmers, and to do this, we need a stronger Sri Lankan dairy industry,Clement noted.

'We're committed to helping Sri Lanka to achieve this and we'll continue to work closely with dairy farmer families, helping them to grow their incomes through more sustainable and commercially sustainable farming operations. We have been collecting milk in Sri Lanka since 1996 starting out with 200 farmers and today our milk collection network has grown to thousands of farmer families, and we process over eight million litres of milk per year.' Fonterra Brands Sri Lanka Marketing Director Roshan de Silva said,'The health Ministry recommends a per capita consumption of two glasses of milk a day, but figures show the current per capita consumption is only half a glass of milk per day.

'If consumers are made aware of this nutrition deficit, there will be tremendous scope for the liquid milk market to grow, so the question of competition won’t arise. When demand increases, suppliers can co-exist. But providing high quality milk to the consumer will consistently remain the benchmark, de Silva pointed out.

Sri Lankans are now be able to enjoy the goodness of Anchor in this new format, following the nationwide launch of Anchor Liquid Milk. The new liquid milk will help meet Sri Lanka's growing demand for dairy products and complements Anchor's milk powder range.

Anchor Liquid Milk is now available in stores and supermarkets across the country in a unique one litre UHT pack.
