Police sergeants complain to SC of unfair promotions

by Chitra Weerarathne

One hundred police sergeants have complained to the Supreme Court by way of a fundamental rights violation petition that the recent promotions of 478 Police sergeants to the rank of Sub Inspector, was in violation of their right to equality and right to be free from discrimination.

They have said that the decision taken by the IGP and the Secretary to the Ministry of law and order is unreasonable and should be quashed by the Supreme Court and the aforesaid respondents should be ordered to hold fresh interviews. The petitioners are more suitable for promotions, but have been unreasonably left out, they have said.

The petitioners want the court to declare the violation of their fundamental rights by the IGP and order the connected authorities to grant them relief.
