Three killed in fish truck mishap at ‘L’ bend

Three men aged 33, 30 and 21 travelling in a lorry transporting from Tangalle to Polonnaruwa were killed when their speeding vehicle crashed on to a wayside tree yesterday morning at the ‘L’ bend junction in Dimbulagala on the Aralaganwila-Mahiyanganaya main road.

Police Spokesman ASP Ruwan Gunasekara told The Island that the mishap had occurred after their vehicle skidded off the road around 5.00 a.m. and the three men including the driver who were in the front seat had succumbed to their injuries.

The victims had been identified as N. H. Roshan Pushpakumara (33) of Kekunadura, Matara, K. H. Danushka Chathuranga (30) of Kudawella South, Nakulagama and P. M. Ireshan Asanka (21), Ulla, Pottuvil, the ASP said.

Police officer attached to Aralaganwila police station conducting investigations told The Island last night that a CCTV camera footage obtained from a nearby shop clearly showed that the vehicle was speeding.

Police officer said that the mishap could have been averted if the driver had followed road signs.

The bodies had been removed from the vehicle with a lot of difficulty and the police had been deployed to protect the fish scattered until the owner of the order had come to collect it, he said.

The bodies were sent to the Polonnaruwa hospital for the post-mortem examination.
