Twenty three MPs want SL expatriates allowed to vote at elections here

By Saman Indrajith

A request has been made by 23 MPs led by JVP MP Sunil Handunetti to Speaker Karu Jayasuriya to appoint a Parliamentary Select Committee to look into the possibility of enabling Lankan expatriates to vote at elections here.

In a letter handed over to the Speaker at his office, the MPs emphasise that franchise is one of the fundamental rights guaranteed by the Constitution. However, Sri Lankan citizens employed abroad have been deprived of their right to vote though their contribution to the national economy has been enormous. It is the responsibility of the government to ensure that the Lankans living in foreign countries nourishing the Lankan economy can exercise their franchise at elections.

The letter has been signed by MPs Sunil Handunnetti, Nihal Galappaththi, Anura Kumara Dissanayake, Ajith P. Perera, Eran Wickramaratne, Edward Gunasekera, Dilip Wedarachchi, Ajith Mannapperuma, Kanchana Wijesekera, D.V. Chanaka, Mujibur Rahuman, Dr Nalinda Jayatissa, Wimalaweera Dissanayake, Imran Maharoof, Harashana Rajakaruna, Chaminda Wijesiri, Dr Kavinda Jayawardene, Prof Ashu Marasinghe, Karunarathna Paranawithana, S. Sritharan, Jayamapthi Wickremeratne, Vijitha Herath and Ranjan Ramanayake.
