Panabokke’s cremation takes place amidst large gathering of mourners

KANDY: The cremation of Mohan Panabokke, Basnayaka Nilame of the historic Sri Vishnu Maha Devale of Kandy and the ancient Devale of Dedimunda in Aluthnuwara was held amidst a large gathering of mourners at the Mahaiyawa Crematorium on Wednesday (21) afternoon.


Panabokke died on Tuesday (20) afternoon. He was fifty eight at the time of his demise.


Former Presidents Mahinda Rajapaksa and Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga paid their last respects to the late Basnayaka Nilame who held the office for 17 years continuously.


Diyawadana Nilame Pradeep Nilanga Dela, Basnayaka Nilames, MP Lohan Ratwatte, Mayor Mahindra Ratwatte, Deputy Mayor Sena Dissanayake, Governor Surangani Ellawala and Chief Minister Sarath Ekanayake were among those who paid their last respects to the late Panabokke.
