Ven. Sobitha Thera’s funeral on Thursday

Funeral of Ven Maduluwawe Sobhitha Thera is scheduled to be held at the Parliament ground at 3.00 pm on Thursday (12) with full state honours.


The government has decided to declare Thursday a day of national mourning following a discussion between Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and Chief Sangha Nayake of the Kotte Sri Kalyani Sama Sri Dharma Sangha Sabha Ven. Ittepane Dhmmalankara at the Naga Vihara in Kotte yesterday.


Ven. Sobhitha Thera passed away around 5.50 am (3.20 am Lankan time) yesterday at Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore where he had been treated at the intensive care unit for the past three days. His remains were brought to the Sri Lankan High Commission at No 76 of Andrew Road in Singapore around noon yesterday.


Remains of the Ven. Thera were brought to Colombo last night.


All expenses of the Sobhitha Thera’s medical treatment were borne by the Sri Lankan government.Ven. Sobhitha Thera underwent heart surgery in a private hospital in Colombo and was transferred to Singapore for further treatment last week (Nov. 03).


A social workers and political activist, Ven. Sobitha Thera campaigned for the abolition of executive presidency. He threw his weight behind Maithripala Sirisena at the last presidential election.


He played a pioneer role in urging the incumbent government to establish independent commissions.


Ven. Sobitha Thera was born on May 09, 1942 at Maduluwawa. His lay name was P. D. Ratnasekera. His parents were Pathirage Don Appuhamy and Karalinahamy. He entered Buddha Sasana in 1955 and obtained higher ordination in 1962.
