Spike in dengue cases

The Ministry of Health and Indigenous Medicine (MHIM) yesterday said that a snap three-day mosquito control programme would be carried out in the Western Province following a spike in the incidence of the disease last month.

A spokesman for the Health Ministry said the programme would commence today (12) with the support from several MOH offices in the Colombo District, six MOH offices in Gampaha and four MOH offices including the National Institute of Health Science (NIHS) in the Kalutara District.

He said 23,139 cases had been reported from January till the beginning of November, this year, while 1591 cases had been reported in August, 1091 cases in September and 1961 in October, out of which 750 cases were reported from the Colombo District.

The death toll from dengue till the month of October, 2015 stood at 34, he said.

He said that in 2014 during the same months (August, September and October) the numbers had been as high as 4,022, 2,640 and 4,297 respectively. The total number of cases reported during the first ten months of the same year had been over 36,650, he added.
