Counsel asks for time to consult experts on Port City projects

Counsel J. C. Weliamuna, who appeared for the petitioner fishing industrialists of Negombo, told the supreme Court, yesterday that scientists should be consulted on reports filed by some respondents, in respect of the Colombo Port City Project. Time was required to consult geologists and environmental experts, he said


The petitioners have complained that the Port City Project of Colombo, has upset off-shore ecosystems. Sixteen mn cubes of rock and 30 mn cubes of sand have to be removed. The fish and the sea plants will perish due to the destruction of thier habitat.


The Court granted the petitioners time till Jan. 19, 2015 to consult scientists.


Among the respondents are the Attorney General, the Sri Lanka Ports Authority, the Director General of Coast Conservation the Ports City Colombo Pvt Limited, the Construction Company.


Dr. Awanthi Perera, Senior State Counsel, who appeared for the Attorney General, told the Court that, the state was reconsidering a new environment assessment report.


Counsels Weliamuna appeared with Pulasthi Hewamanna for the petitioner.
