IUSF: Committee studying student problems clueless

Inter University Students’ Federation yesterday said that it had no faith in the committee appointed by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe to look into the grievances of university students.

Convener of the IUSF Lahiru Gunasekera told a press conference at the Centre for Society and Religion in Colombo yesterday: "The committee has no practical knowledge of the problems we are experiencing. They know nothing about difficulties faced by us. Prime Minister’s committee is only an eyewash."

"When we recently met the committee some members asked us whether we had walked all the way from Jayawardenepura University to Colombo during our recent protest march. For them, walking that distance was unimaginable. Such persons have been appointed to look into our problems," he said.

Gunasekera said that the statement made by University Education and Highways Minister Lakshman Kiriella that the latter had solved all the problems in the Higher National Diploma in Accountancy course was not true.

"So far not even a circular has been issued to the effect of recognizing the HNDA course on equal terms with a university accountancy degree. We demand the minister to issue a circular to that effect and give equal status with a degree to the HNDA course," Gunasekera said.

"Various committees have been appointed. Our main problem is neither the police attack nor remanding of students. Our top priority is to have the HNDA recognised as an equivalent to a degree. Then our second demand is to get Mahapola bursary increased upto Rs. 5,000. We have no trust in the committees that waste time without granting us what we demand."
