KANDY –

The National Teachers’ Council on Sunday (Nov. 22) alleged that the UNP-SLFP coalition government was in the process of implementing the UNP’s infamous economic project, Regaining Sri Lanka, once rejected by the people.

The UNP-led United National Front (UNF) government implemented project during 2002-2003 period.

Addressing the media in Kandy, President of the National Teachers’ Council Nimal Premawansa claimed that the sharp reduction in the number of Year Five Scholarship beneficiaries, denial of public servants’ rights as well as offering of vouchers instead of uniform material to students pointed to the despicable government strategy. The council is affiliated to the breakaway JVP faction, national Freedom Front (NFF) led by Wimal Weerawansa.

Premawansa pointed out as uniform material had been provided to students since 1993 without major problem there was no need to change the system. In fact, there had never been requests from any interested parties to introduce a voucher system, Premawansa said, allegeing that the government was all out to do away with existing welfare measures.

The teacher trade unionist said that the government was bent on causing chaos in the education sector.

Executive Committee members of the Union Madduma Bandara and Narada Jayatilaka were present.
