Expel MPs including ex-prez for skipping parliamentary sessions - Dy. minister

By Saman Indrajith

Power and Energy Deputy Minister Ajith Perera requested President Maithripala Sirisena in Parliament yesterday to bring in new laws to remove the MPs including former President Mahinda Rajapaksa from their positions for not participating in parliamentary sittings.

President Sirisena was in Parliament from 10.00 am yesterday and the request by Deputy Minister Perera was made when the President came into the chamber and took his seat.

Deputy Minister Perera said MPs could not serve the people without participating in parliamentary debates. Such MPs guilty of dereliction of their duties should be expelled from Parliament, he said.

The Deputy Minister said that MP Rajapaksa did not attend debates and if the latter continued to do so the opportunity to attend parliament should be given to the person who obtained the next highest number of votes at the general election from that district.

Former President Rajapaksa had been allocated 15 minutes to speak in the debate on Geneva resolution against Sri Lanka but he had not turned up for the debate. Therefore, laws should be amended to sack such MPs from their positions, the Deputy Minister said.
