Nalanda College came out with a renewed pledge in the second half to break a 1-1 deadlock to seal the fate over Royal College and thus clinch the all-island Boys’ under-17 hockey title at the end of a scintillating final at the Nandimithra Ekanayake Synthetic Turf in Matale last evening.
Once again it was a final that contained all the thrills and vigour in which the game went down to the wire with the scores leveled at 1-1.
Both teams stayed fairly level the entire match, despite this clash of styles. The Nalanda team was a very fast opposition for Royal, but their run style came as a surprise. Nalanda technique worked against the Royal team which lost possession due to some disorganization on the field. Both teams were strong in defence, particularly the Royalists taking counter-attack opportunities more often than Nalanda.
A penalty stroke converted by right extreme Pathum Prabodha and a field goal scored by left extreme Ashan Sangeeth brought Nalanda the victory due to a great finish, while right half Shahid Hussain scored the solitary goal for the Royalists.
