Excise detects more smuggled foreign liquor, cigarettes

The Special Raids Unit of the Colombo Excise Office yesterday raided a warehouse at Kochchipalliya in Grandpass and took into custody 264 bottles of foreign liquor and 93,200 cigarettes smuggled out of the Bandaranaike International Airport, Katunayake, with a market value of four million rupees.


The excise men also took into custody a van used to transport the contraband and three suspects.


The suspects had confessed to the excise officers that the booze and cigarettes were to be despatched to star class hotels in Colombo, spokesman for the Excise Department, Inspector Jayantha de Silva said.


The main suspect had been apprehended earlier with smuggled 5,400 bottles of foreign liquor and 450,000 foreign cigarettes and fined Rs. 1.5 million by the Commissioner General of Excise, he said.
