NTUF to appoint Special Committee to look into Pension replacement

By Dilanthi Jayamanne

The National Trade Union Front yesterday said a special committee would be appointed within the next two to three weeks to discuss the proposed fund to replace the existing pension for those who enter government service from this month.

Assistant General Secretary, Saman Jayasekara said the committee would comprise government and trade union representatives from health, postal and railway sectors.

The government has refused to reverse its decision to scrap the non contributory pension scheme proposed by the 2016 budget. However, it has agreed to explore the possibility of forming a fund similar to the Employees’ Provident Fund in the government sector.

The Committee hoped to prepare a report, Jayasekera said.

Responding to a question the Assistant General Secretary said the new system would not apply to those who joined the government service prior to Dec 31, 2015. They would be entitled to the non-contributory pension scheme.
