Only telephone invitation for MR

By Norman Palihawadana

Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday said though he had been invited over the telephone to the first anniversary celebrations of the government he was unable to participate as he had to visit the Dalada Maligawa in Kandy.

He said he had been invited by a government official.

Some of the government politicians who accused the UPFA government of abductions had been active members of the much dreaded vigilante group known as PRRA which abducted people in pajeros and ran torture chambers where thousands of suspected JVPers were killed in the late 1980s, the former President claimed.

He said the police were going through a bad period as evident from the Embilipitiya incident.

Rajapaksa denied as baseless claims by government spokesmen that his loyalists in Parliament would desert him in their numbers.
