By Madura Ranwala

Sabaragamuwa Province Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police C. D. Wickramaratne handed over an interim report to Inspector General of Police, N. K. Illangakoon on Sunday (January 17) over a recent clash between Embilipitiya police and some villagers.

A man called Sumith Prasanna Jayawardene sustained injuries during the clash and later died in hospital. Four police officers including OIC of the police station also sustained injuries. Three other villagers, too, were injured in the clash.

Police Spokesman ASP Ruwan Gunasekera told The Island last night that the content of the report could not be divulged as the investigation was still on.

ASP Gunasekera said about 20 witnesses had given evidence.

He said the Magistrate’s inquiry  would reveal whether Sumith jumped off the building or not.

ASP W.C.D. Dharmaratne, who was in charge of the area at the time of the incident and is alleged to have been at the scene itself, was a respected police officer, according to some of the villagers and religious dignitaries in the area.
