Law prohibiting killing of pregnant cows not enforced

By Chitra Weerarathne

Chairperson of the Swarna Boptiya Foundation, Swarana Bopitiya, has complained to the District Court of Colombo that the laws which prohibit the killing of Pregnant cows are not being implemented in Sri Lanka.

The plaintiff has cited as defendants the Minister of Justice, Wijeyadasa Rajapakse and the Attorney General. The plaintiff has requested the court to order the Minister of Justice to implement the law which prohibits the killing of pregnant cows.

The state should reduce the pain inflicted on the cows during the killing process. The technology used in foreign lands to do away with the pain should be used. The foundation chaired by the petitioner has offered to donate two such instruments, she has submitted.

The plaintiff argued that there were people who consumed cows’ flesh. Hence the state could not prohibit the killing.

Barnaul Weerasinghe is the instructing attorney in the case.
