NMRA defends its position

When contacted the NMRA said that it had approved medicines that were passed by Medical Regulatory Authorities in the UK, USA and other similar developed countries.

"Where the drug is experimental and special, the NMRA has requested for further information and is awaiting additional information," it said.

It is widely known that cancer drugs are the most expensive group of drugs in a country’s medical budget. Sometimes 30 percent of a country’s medical budget has been spent on Cancer patients who would constitute less than one percent of all patients. Pharmaceutical companies are noted for charging high prices for cancer drugs- which has become a problem in countries that are both developed and developing.

The same drug was offered by different companies at Rs. 10,000 and Rs. 150,000 per vial. This shows the enormous price variation in cancer drugs.
