Strike forces National Hospital to outsource medical lab tests

The National Hospital yesterday said it had taken steps to outsource laboratory tests during the token strike of medical laboratory technologists (MLTs) of the hospital demanding the annulment of a punishment transfer given to the former Secretary of the Professions Supplementary to Medicine, Saman Jayasekera.

NHSL Director, Dr. Anil Jasinghe said there had been a drop in the number of lab tests ordered during strikes.

MLTs of the Joint Council of Professions Supplementary to Medicine (JCPSM) launched the token strike which is scheduled to end at 8.00 am today (29).

Vice President of the JCPSM, Ravi Kumudesh said the union had also been called to discuss the issue with Health Ministry officials this morning (29). He asked the Health Secretary to investigate and find out the circumstances under which Jayasekara had been given the punishment transfer in 2012. "It was the price that some trade unionists had to pay at the time for wanting a change of government and for siding with the then Health Minister who is now the country’s President," he claimed.

Kumudesh said in 2012 the unions had been able to convince the then Director General Health Services Dr. Ajith Mendis Jayasekera had been a victim of a political witch hunt.
