Jt. Opposition promises protests in Parliament unless...

UPFA MP Ranjith Zoysa yesterday said if Speaker Karu Jayasuriya did not recognize the Joint Opposition as a separate political entity in Parliament it would resort to protests to win that status.

He said that there were 52 MPs in the Joint Opposition group and they all were of the opinion that they should treated as an independent group in the opposition. "All of us are ready to stand up and state to the House that we are independent 52 times on Wednesday (10). If the Speaker does not heed our call, we will do everything in our power to wing our due position."

Zoysa said they had requested the Speaker to recognise them as an independent group in the Opposition. "The Speaker’s response was that he could not make a decision on his own and wanted to consult President Maithripala Sirisena on the matter. The leader of the MPs in Parliament is the Speaker and he does not have to consult the President on such matters."

Zoysa said the Speaker had promised to make a special announcement with regard to the position of the Joint Opposition on Feb. 09. "We hope that the Speaker will stay neutral. If he favours the government we will be left with no alternative but to resort to protests to win out rightful position in Parliament."
