Scout jamborees in Jaffna for first time

Celebration of centenary of scouting in Jaffna

Eight thousand scouts along with their masters from all the districts of Sri Lanka will participate at the Jamboree to be held in Jaffna from 20-26 February at Municipal Grounds and adjoining areas. This is the first time a National Jamboree is being held in Northern Province and also coincides with 100 years of scouting in Jaffna. The Theme of the Jamboree is ‘Friendship and Understanding’, according to the Sri Lanka Scouts Association.

Around 200 foreign scouts and leaders are expected. Already Nepal, India, Malaysia and Bangladesh have confirmed their participation. The Maldives is yet to confirm its participation.

The campers will be divided into four Sub Camps namely Pidurutalagala, Namunukula, Rakwana and Samanala. The Sub camp Administration Team will administer the Sub Camps which will be headed by a sub camp Chief with a Deputy and Assistant.

Campers are expected to arrive on Saturday (20) at 8.00 a.m Activities will commence with the Soft Opening on Sunday 21st February at 8.30 a.m.

Around 25 activities of Adventure, Skills, Culture, Environment, Archaeology, Traditional Games, Health and sustainable Energy will be conducted between 9.00 a.m. – 5.00 p.m. on each day.

Activity Award will be given to the scouts who complete the minimum numbers of activities required. And activity book will be given to all registered scouts to record the activities done.

The Jamboree will be ceremonially declared open by President Maithripala Sirisena on Feb. 22 at 4.00 p.m. at the Jaffna Central College Grounds. The opening also coincide with the Baden Powell Day.

Daily cultural and musical presentations will take place from 7.00 p.m. the International Night will be on Feb. 22 2016. The Jaffna Centenary Day will be held on Feb. 23 with activities planned for the whole day culminating with a cultural presentation. The Army Beat Group will be in attendance Feb. 21 and the Navy Beat Group the next day.

The closing ceremony will be on Feb. 25 at 4.00 pm followed by the Arena Display depicting the history of scouting in Sri Lanka followed by a musical presentation by the Air Force.

Campers will leave on Feb. 26 after obtaining clearance certificates.

The Jamboree Chief is the Chief Commissioner Prof. Nimal De Silva and the Joint Organizing Commissioners are M. F. S. Muheed and Damian Silva. There are 12 organizing teams assigned with various subjects.
