Central Bank Governor Arjuna Mahendran and several senior officials of the CB yesterday appeared before the Committee on Public Enterprises (COPE) in respect of ongoing investigations into an alleged bond scam.

COPE sources told The Island that the parliamentary watchdog committee would expedite investigations into alleged irregularities which occurred soon after the presidential polls in January 2011. Sources said that a report on the investigations would be tabled in Parliament shortly.

The COPE led by JVP MP Sunil Handunetti would examine a report issued by a committee appointed by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe as well as the report of the previous COPE headed by D. E. W. Gunasekera, sources said.

Responding to a query, sources said that the COPE would also inquire into accusations directed at those who had been responsible for the financial sector during the previous administration. They, too, would be summoned soon, sources said, adding that investigations were proceeding.
