Tug-of-war at Lanka Hospitals halts cleaning of fungal growth

But CEO claims no such incident

A tug-of-war between the board directors and the hospital administration at Lanka Hospitals halted the cleaning of a fungal growth in a ward close to its Cardiac Theatre on the second floor of the hospital.

Informed medical sources said that the matter had been brought to the notice of the Hospital’s Director Medical Services by its medical staff as the issue could endanger the lives of patients undergoing surgery.

They said the matter had been brought to the attention of the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) who had taken immediate steps to call in quotations from one of its service providers to carry out the emergency cleansing required to ensure the sterile surroundings of the Cardiac Theatre.

However, when the cleaning was underway, a certain member on the board of directors had called a halt to the operation stating that the CEO had no business to handle such matters without the Board’s knowledge.

Sources said that the situation remained unresolved owing to this interference.

However, when CEO Lanka Hospitals, Deshantha de Silva was contacted for comment, he denied that there was a fungal growth close to one of the operating theatres in the hospital.
