One week shopping bonanza for Lankan consumers

Sri Lankan consumers are in for a seven day shopping bonanza this year, thanks to a campaign launched by the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA).

Thousands of business outlets in Sri Lanka will provide customers with discounts, benefits and other offers during "Reward the Consumer Week" organised by the CAA from March 14 to 20.

The CAA would launch an awareness campaign in Kandy and 25 other locations in different parts of the country, Chairman of the Consumer Affairs Authority Hasitha Tillekeratne told The Island.

Plans were also afoot to form School Consumer Circles in 20 schools in Kandy, he said.

Promoting consumer education with regard to good health, safety and security of consumers was one of the main functions of the CAA and getting its message across through schools was the goal of his outfit, Tillekeratne said.

Business outlets connected to food and beverage, tourism, financial services, textiles etc. would join hands with the CAA to make the project a success, Tillekeratne said.

"It can also be considered by business owners as a week for Marketing Promotions, which is an important element in the Marketing Mix," said Tillekeratne, who also served as the President of Gem and Jewellery Authority.

Deputy Director (Information) Samantha Karunaratne said her division encouraged the establishment of Consumer Organisations at regional level.

Of more than 400 Consumer Organisations registered with the CAA, around 50 -60 percent were really active. "We hope to restructure and activate the dormant ones during Consumer Week," the Deputy Director (Information) said.
