Wanted thief arrested

He spent Rs. 8,000 daily on drugs

Athurugiriya police last Friday arrested a man wanted for a series of thefts.

The suspect, a 52-year-old resident of Vidyala Junction, Hokandara, is a father of two.

Investigations have revealed that the suspect living with his family in Anuradhapura had moved to Hokandara and rented a room to commit burglaries and thefts in the area.

A drug addict, he had funded his drug habit with money he received from the sale of stolen articles, police said, adding that he needed at least Rs. 8,000.

The suspect had removed the side mirrors of vehicles and sold them to spare parts dealers at Panchikawatte for a song, the police said.

The police said other crimes perpetrated by him were burglaries and stealing of gold jewellery and he had been held on remand on previous occasions.

According to police the suspect had been a tailor in Piliyandala and Kottawa and he had quit the business to become a seaman. While being at sea he had got hooked on drugs, investigators said.

According to police he had busted all the money earned as a seaman and then taken to stealing.

The suspect was due to be produced before the Kaduwela Magistrate’s Court.
