High Court grants bail to BasilMarch 10, 2016, 10:23 pm

Colombo High Court Judge Padmini N. Ranawaka Goonetillake yesterday granted bail to former Minister of Economic Development, Basil Rajapaksa, and the former Director of Divinaguma, Kithsiri Ranawaka.
They are both indicted in the High Court for Abusing Public Property, by diverting "Divinaguma funds to print five million of almanacs, bearing a picture of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, in the run-up to the presidential election on January 8, 2015. The money allegedly abused amounts to about Rs. 29 million. Each accused was allowed bail in Rs. 500,000 and two sureties of five million rupees each. They are prohibited from leaving the country.
President’s Counsel Jayantha Weerasinghe, appeared with President’s Counsel, Anil Silva for Rajapaksa.
Counsel Suranga Bandara appeared for Ranawaka.
Deputy Solicitor General, Ayesha Jinasena, appeared for the Attorney General.
The case will be called on July 27, for inquiry.
