Petition against jumbo Cabinet to be supported on May 30

By Chitra Weerarathne

A petition filed in the Supreme Court by attorney-at-law Unawatunage Aruna Laksiri, against the appointment of a Cabinet of Ministers, comprising more than 30 members will be supported in court on May 30, 2015.

The petition has said that President Maithripala Sirisena appointed a Cabinet of Ministers comprising a large number of members without duly forming a National government. Only a National government can have more than 30 members in the Cabinet of Ministers. The present government is a coalition of convenience and not a national government, the petitioner has argued, requesting the court to declare that the petitioner’s constitutional right to equality has been denied due to the presidential action.

Among the respondents are the President and the Attorney General.

The petition was called before the court, yesterday, and re-fixed for support on May 30, 2016.
