SLFP Treasurer and Social Empowerment and Welfare Minister S. B. Dissanayake yesterday warned party MPs against attending tomorrow’s Joint Opposition’s rally at Hyde Park as it could cause them to lose their parliamentary seats.

He told a media briefing at the Government Information Department in Colombo that if the UPFA MPs went against the party directives, the party leadership would have to take disciplinary action against them and if they were sacked from the party they would lose their seats.

Previously, when the group of MPs including Gamini Dissanayake and Lalith Athulathmudali left the UNP, the late President Ranasinghe Premadasa removed their party membership, Dissanayake said, adding that there was a Supreme Court decision on the issue and any MP who had been removed from the party would lose his seat in parliament.

The Joint Opposition rally to be held at Hyde Park tomorrow was not good for the SLFP-led UPFA and it would be harmful to the party as well as the country, Dissanayake claimed.

He said tomorrow’s rally would be beneficial to the opposition political party like the JVP and the UNP as well as the LTTE.

Minister Dissanayake also said the SLFP would take disciplinary action against those who participate attend tomorrow’s rally.
