Farmers go to court seeking guaranteed price for paddy

By Chitra Weerarathne

A writ application filed in the Court of Appeal by a group of 58 paddy cultivators asking for a guaranteed price for paddy will be supported on March 29, 2016.

The petitioners have said the price paid to the cultivators for a kilo of paddy (nadu) is only Rs. 18 while a kilo of nadu rice is sold at Rs. 80.

Part of this profit does not accrue to the farmer, the petitioner has argued.

Among the respondents are the Paddy Marketing Board, Minister of Agriculture Duminda Dissanayake and connected authorities.
