Mahanayakes’ Aramayas to be taken over by the Govt.

Kandy – Cultural and Art Affairs Minister T. B. Ekanayake, calling of the Maha Nayaka Theros of Malwatta and Asgiriya, said that steps would be taken to take over all official Aramayas (official residences) of Mahanayaka Theros, including those of the Malwatta and Asgiriya.


The intension, the Minister said was to ensure better maintenance of the Aramayas of the Mahanayake Theros.


Most Ven. Tibbatuwawa Sri Siddhartha Sumangala (Malwatta) and Most Ven. Udugama Sri Buddharakkitha (Asgiriya) said that there were lapses in the maintenance of their official residences.


The prelates said that there was no regular supervision and attending to repaires on time.


They also said that there was no permanent and responsible authority who could be contacted when necessary, with regard to the official residences.


The Mahanayake Thero of Asgiriya told the Minister that he often personally attended to repairs.


Ekanayaka said that he would take over the official Armayas of the Mahanayaka Theros under his Ministry and a gazette notification would be published to that effect.


Minister Ekanayake told the Mahanayaka Theros that steps would be taken to attend to necessary repairs at Vihares and Devales.


His Ministry had received allocation of fund from the Treasury, for the purpose.


Revenue to the Central Cultural triangle has increased due to rise in the tourist arrivals. Tourist arrivals had increased to about 650,000 this year. This was due to the prevailing peace, the Minister added.
