The delayed shipment of 500 tons of chicken and two million eggs from India was scheduled to arrive in the port of Colombo on Friday (Dec. 24) night.
The Media Secretary of the Ministry of Cooperatives and Internal Trade Nipun Ekanayake told The Island that due to heavy rains in India the shipment had been delayed.
He said that the first consignment of 500 tons of chicken would be stored for three days and released to the retail and wholesale traders through Lanka Sathosa, while the two million eggs once cleared today (Saturday) would be released immediately through Lanka Sathosa to retail and wholesale traders.
The Cabinet has approved the importation of 2,500 tons of chicken and 50 million eggs from India.
