Delay in paying allowances irks Sabaragamuwa doctors

By Dilanthi Jayamanne

Doctors of the Sabaragamuwa Province yesterday warned they would resort to trade union action if the provincial authorities failed to pay their communication allowance by next Tuesday (05).

Secretary of the Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA), Dr Nalinda Herath said there had been several issues as regards the payment of the allowance which enabled doctors to provide an efficient service. The authoritarian decisions of Health Ministry Officials had led to an unwarranted issue, he said.

The GMOA Secretary said his outfit had met the Director General Health Services (DGHS) Dr. Palitha Mahipala and discussed the issue. The DGHS had directed his officials to adhere to the circular concerned and pay the stipulated amounts to doctors, Dr. Herath said.

However, the Health Authorities of the Sabaragamuwa Provincial Council were not following the DGHS’s instructions and continued to delay paying the communication allowance to the doctors of the Province, the GMOA official said.

He said the GMOA Sabaragamuwa Provincial branch unions had held several rounds of discussions with the provincial authorities in that regard, but in vain.

Those officials should be held responsible for the inconvenience to be caused to patients during the trade union action by the doctors of the Province, Dr. Herath warned.
