Amidst hectic preparations for the Joint Opposition rally at Kirulapone, former President Mahinda Rajapaksa will leave today (April 23) for Thailand.

The Kurunegala District MP will be accompanied by former External Affairs Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris.

They’ll be back on April 26 evening. Since his defeat at the January 2015 presidential polls, the former President hasn’t been overseas.

Sources told The Island that the SLFP-led

Joint Opposition was going ahead with a separate rally in spite of efforts being made in some quarters to sabotage it. Sources said that SLFP General Secretary and Agriculture Minister Duminda Dissanayake’s alleged threat to initiate disciplinary action against those attending the rebel rally was meaningless.

The former President has assured his participation at the rally and, therefore, the Joint Opposition wasn’t concerned about various pronouncements made by the SLFP group in the government.
