"Let me give you one advice. Do not sell your land in the Western Province in a hurry. You will be able to fetch a much better price for your lands in a year or two. If you own land, keep it. When the county develops further, many will demand your land at a good price, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said in the course of addressing a New Year gathering on Saturday.

"Sri Lanka will be transformed into a major economic and a monetary hub in the Indian Ocean/region with the implementing of new economic policies, where every citizen will be enabled to engage in transactions in monetary markets, Wickremesinghe said.

The Prime Minister was speaking at a Sinhala and Tamil New Year celebration at Suduwella, Maradana.

"With the government's new eonomic policies that have been placed for the development of the country, Colombo will be the key centre in our economic development programme and it will be developed together with the Western Province, the Prime Minister said.

The government's megalpolis develoment programme is also geared to achieving hub status, he said.

The Prime Minister explained that the value of land in Colombo will increase in the future when the government’s economic programme gets under way with the implementation of megapolis programme.

"We will improve the value of lands in Colombo and we will facilitate all the people to earn an income, he explained.

He said the Sinhala and Tamil New Year 2016 is being celebrated on a high note. "Everyone seems to have cash in their hands. Many went shopping and consumed goods to their satisfaction. This means the economy had developed to some extent. Our effort is to further expand this development, he added.

" When I see the New Year gifts that are in line for distribution today one can see that the economy has developed to some extent. This reminded me of 1977 when I handed over a bicycle as the first prize at a New Year celebration. It too was a great happening, he said.
