SC calls for JMO reports on police assault victims

The Supreme Court yesterday directed its registrar to obtain three JMO reports regarding the police assault on Pothipitiya Gamage Lasantha, Pothupitiya Gamage Vasantha and Pathmasiri Mendis in Embilipitiya on January 4, 2016.

Sumith Prasanna, one of the persons who had been present at a party, during which the police assault had allegedly occurred, received fatal injuries due to allegedly falling from a balcony.

The wife of the deceased had also filed a fundamental rights violation petition complaining of police assault and torture of her husband.

The Registrar of the Court is to get the three JMO reports by July 7, 2016.

Among the respondents in these petitions are ASP Dharmaratne of Embilipitiya and the IGP.

Counsel Lakshan Dias, Sampath Pushpa Kumara and Priyalal Sirisena appeared for the petitioner.

The bench comprised Chief Justice K. Sripavan and Justice Anil Gooneratne.
