Rain misery extends into the night with no respite

Katunayake recorded the highest rainfall during the period 8.30 am to 5.30pm yesterday (May 15) as heavy rains caused inconvenience to people in many areas. The situation got worse in most areas as rains intensified with night fall.

During the above nine hour period Katunayake recorded 137.7 mm followed by Trincomalee (125.7 mm), Kurunegala (117.2 mm), Colombo (106.9 mm), Mahailuppallama (98 mm), Ratnapura (93.5 mm), Kandy (79.2 mm), and Batticaloa (74.7 mm).

Many areas of Colombo were inundated due to heavy rains.

The Met Department said that rains would continue on Monday.

At Nalluruwa, Panadura more than 30 families had been displaced when a gale hit the area. Several houses had been damaged. One person had been injured when a tree fell on his house.
