GMOA volunteers for disaster duty

The Government Medical Officers Association (GMOA) yesterday said its members were ready to assist people affected by floods and landslides.


GMOA Secretary, Dr Nalinda Herath pledged the Union’s support to the Health Ministry’s Disaster Management Unit (DMU) by providing the active service of one of its Executive Committee members. The Disaster Management Sub Committee (DMSC) established by the GMOA would be coordinated by doctors and community medical officers, he said.


Dr. Herath, highlighting the mission of the Sub Committee, said it was prepared to provide continuous medical assistance to flood victims, especially those who had fallen ill, help avert all means of possible epidemic outbreaks, ensure the well being of children affected by floods and provide counseling to victims affected by disasters.

The GMOA Secretary said the union had requested all its members who were on leave to report for duty. All branches had also been requested to carry out relief services with the cooperation of the heads of their relevant institutions.


He said the GMOA branches of the National Hospital, Chilaw and Matara General Hospitals and Base Hospital Horana had already commenced mobile medical health services in affected areas.
