Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe yesterday pledged that the government would rebuild the houses that had been damaged as a result of a fire at the Salawa Army camp in Kosgama on Sunday.

The assurance came following a high level meeting Wickremesinghe chaired at the Pahathgama Divisional Secretariat yesterday afternoon. He had earlier visited the affected areas.

The army said one soldier had been killed in the fire and eight others injured.

Officials said that around 40 civilians living in the vicinity of the camp had sought medical treatment due to having gases that had emanated due to the fire. "Some 1,788 families have been affected.

Some of them are being housed in welfare camps at Wataraka, Padukka and Bopitiya Schools. Water supply had been disrupted in the area, they said.

President Maithripala Sirisena on Sunday directed that all government institutions and schools in the Kosgama area be kept closed yesterday.
