The Health Ministry yesterday said that the explosion at the Salawa Army Camp had caused severe damages to the Kosgama Rural Hospital.

Health Ministry spokesman Nipun Ekanayake said patients from Kosgama had been transferred from that hospital to Avissawella Base Hospital.

Sunday’s (05) explosion killed one soldier. However, 39 injured persons were being treated, he said. One patient with head injuries had been transferred to the Kandy Teaching Hospital. Of the remaining, seven were being treated at Avissawella, while the others were treated and released.

Ekanayake said the Director General Health Services (DGHS) Dr Palitha Mahipala had placed Avissawella, Homagama Base Hospitals, Karawanella, Padukka Hospitals as well as the National and Kalubowila Teaching Hospitals on stand by. About 25 ambulances had also been deployed to the area where the explosion occurred.
