UB passes away


Former Minister U. B.Wijekoon passed away at the Kandy Hospital yesterday after a brief illness. He was 79.

Born in Madovita, Welimada, Wijekoon Mudiyanselage Ukku Banda Wijekoon received his education Welimada Central College and later graduated from the University of Peradeniya in 1959.

He entered the Ceylon Administrative service in 1960 and served as District Revenue Officer (DRO) in Vavuniya, Nuwara-Eliya, Anuradhapura and Kurunegala districts. He was once the UNP organiser for the Dambadeniya Electorate.

Wijekoon was the District Minister for Jaffna during President J.R. Jayawardene’s tenure.

Wijekoon later became Cabinet minister for Home Affairs, Public Administration and Provincial Councils and also Textile Industries under President Ranasinghe Premadasa.

Wijekoon also served as Sri Lanka’s ambassador to Russia in 2003-2004.

He contested the 2010 presidential election as an independent candidate with the Jak fruit as his symbol.

His remains have been handed over to the Medical Faculty of the Peradeniya University as per his request.
