Health Minister Dr Rajitha Senaratne yesterday turned down a request from the private sector to hike prices of lab tests and medical services and hospital care.

Spokesman for the Health Ministry, Nipun Ekanayake said a group of private hospital representatives had asked for a 20 per cent increase in their charges when they met the Minister yesterday.

The Spokesman said Minister Dr Senaratne had said the Ministry had already warned that it would blacklist private health institutions if it found any government specialist or medical officers there during their regular working hours.

There were several complaints from the public regarding the private sector health care providers, the spokesman said.

Ekanayake said a seven member committee had been appointed to give proposals towards the development of government and private sector health services.

The Committee comprises Director General Health Services (DGHS) Dr Palitha Mahipala (Chairman), Director Private Sector Health Services, Dr Kanthi Ariyaratne, Dr Upul Gunasekara, Registrar SLMC, Dr Terrance de Silva, Dr Lakith Peiris, Dr S. Ratnapriya, and M. Ali.
