An order by the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) not to proceed with the construction of a seven storeyed housing complex at Frankfurt Place, Colombo-04 and to demolish what has already been constructed has been ignored by its owners, who continue with the construction.

The CMC said the construction of the building on a 17-perch block of land was illegal and it had ordered the owners to demolish it within 14 days of receipt of the notice to demolish.

The notice was sent on April 20 and the CMC said the owners should inform the Town Planning Unit of the Municipality once it was demolished and the Municipality reserved the right to resort to legal action in case of non-compliance.

Municipal Commissioner V. K. Anura said the CMC h ad acted on a complaint from the residents of the area.

The Commissioner said since those responsible for the construction had failed to follow its order he had given instructions to the Town Planning Unit to demolish the building after seeking a court order.

OIC Bambalapitiya Police, Chief Inspector Kamal Perera said, "I received a complaint from the residents. Thereafter an investigation was conducted and the owners of the building were ordered to suspend construction work."

He said a report would be submitted to the relevant parties for further action.
