Organisation For Protecting Customs requests a meeting with President

Controversial New Customs Law:

By Madura Ranwala

The Organisation For Protecting Customs (OFPC) on Monday handed over a letter to President Maithripala Sirisena seeking his intervention to thwart attempts being made by Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake to overhaul Customs Ordinance and implement a new customs law.

OFPC comprises the All Ceylon Customs Services Union, the Sri Lanka Independent Government Union Organisation,

the Customs Guard Union and the Wharf Representatives Union.

The present Customs Ordinance had helped the country earn a huge amount of revenue by way of fines from errant importers but the proposed New Customs Law would help protect drug smugglers and fraudulent importers, while harming genuine importers or traders, a representative of the Customs Inspectors’ Union said.

Representatives of OFPC were awaiting a positive response from the President, a Customs trade unionist said last night.
