Shortage of tamed elephants affects Kandy Perahera

KANDY: The existing shortage of tamed elephants will affect the conducting of the Kandy Annual Esala Perahera, Basnayaka Nilame of Sri Maha Natha Devale of Kandy, Attorney Gayan Heenkenda said at a meeting to discuss arrangements for the annual pageant.


Diyawadana Nilame Pradeep Nilanga Dela announcing the Esala Perahera programme said the erection of "Kap" heralding the commencement of the pageant would take place on August 3.


This will be followed by the Kumbal Perahera beginning on August 8 to conclude with the Maha Perahera on the night of August 17.


The water-cutting ceremony and the Day Perahera will be held on August 18.


Kandy’s Senior SP Gamini Ellepola said that about 3,000 police personnel would be deployed on duty during the pageant.
