Asian Youth Championship medalist Chamal Kumarasiri of D.S. Senanayake College, Meerigama matched country's best triple jump performance so far this year at any level when he cleared the 16 metre barrier in the Under-19 triple jump on day two of the Western Province Schools Athletics Championship at Diyagama on Wednesday.

The 18-year-old trained by H.W. Suresh Kumara (Sports Officer of Meerigama) cleared 16.07 metres, a personal best, in his final attempt to establish a new Western Province Schools Athletic record.

The youngster won a silver medal at the Asian Youth Championship in 2015 and was placed fifth at the IAAF World Youth Athletics Championships a year ago in Colombia.

Kumarasiri had three other successful jumps reading 15.86m, 15.77m and 15.98m.

His dominance was such that the best feats of his closest opponents were more than a metre behind his record mark.

Nipun Kavindu of Loyola College, Negombo (14.73m) and Amesh Rachintha Perera of Maris Stella College, Negombo (14.42m) were second and third respectively.

The athlete from Meerigama matched the best performance at senior national level so far this year with his feat yesterday. Leading senior national triple jumper Dinesh Fernando cleared 16.07 metres at the Lanka Lions Athletic Championship.
