The ‘National Guidelines on Management of Dengue Fever and Dengue Haemorrhagic Fever in Adults and Children,’ were launched at the Epidemiology Unit on Thursday (Dec. 30). The spokesman for the Health Ministry said the guidelines paid special attention to recognizing symptoms and treating patients.

He said a majority of patients waited till the last moment to seek medical attention from government hospitals. It was too late. The guidelines focus on how to take care of those patients as well, he said.

They were drafted under the guidance of the Sri Lanka Physicians Association, Sri Lanka Pediatricians Association and the Epidemiology Unit.

The number of dengue patients recorded in November, 2009 was 1,882 with 21 deaths. The total number of patients recorded during the last two months of the same year was 5,888.

The spokesman said the number of dengue cases had declined from last year due to the control programmes carried out by the forces and the Presidential Dengue Task Force.

They were able to bring down the numbers to 645 in November while the number recorded in December was 517 patients with four deaths. The total number of dengue deaths during the last two months in 2009 was 71 while deaths recorded within the last two months of this year was seven, he added.
