Public servants could be granted a two-year salary increase, if the government used the wealth of the LTTE’s former chief arms procurer Kumaran Pathmanathan, the UNP said yesterday.

UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe, addressing a news conference in Colombo, said that the Mahinda Rajapaksa regime should stop making excuses for failing to grant the promised Rs. 2,500 salary hike to public sector employees and use KP’s money for the purpose.

He said that KP was well protected and living a luxurious life, while the masses were suffering.

"President Rajapaksa, by not keeping his election pledge of easing the burdens that has been imposed on the common man, has begun and ended 2010 with a big lie," the Opposition Leader said.

The government, was being very vague about its budget proposals on electricity tariffs and salaries increases. The public expected clear statements and not rhetoric on issues that affected their very existence, Wickremesinghe said.

The Rajapaksa regime, he said, was pretending to be pro-poor, but was actually following IMF and World Bank directives, which included higher taxes and slashing of subsidies.Wickremesinghe said that the government was duty bound to make a clear statement to parliament on how and when salaries would be increased and the high cost of living reduced.
